Mitcham Community Orchard has won the National Clean Britain Community Award 2015

The National Clean Britain Community Award for 2015 has been awarded to Mitcham Community Orchard and Gardens.

The Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) annual Clean Britain Awards recognise and reward the achievements and contribution of Local Authority street scene teams and community volunteers in maintaining public places and spaces.

The judges commented 'We received a record number of entries this year which made the awarding process extremely tough but your entry shone out against the others and our judges were really impressed with the sustainable use of the area for planting and growing vegetables and teaching children new skills and giving them a sense of ownership within the community.'

The award was presented at the CIWM's prestigious 'Sustainability and Resource Awards' on 5 November 2015.

UPDATE - Action Afternoon 8 August 2015

Big thanks to everyone who had fun and worked in the orchard - we had a great turnout and the sun shone for us.

The orchard looks even lovelier now, after a lot of work clearing the wildflower meadows (thanks the 2 Johns for wielding the strimmer and Charlotte and Paul in particular for collecting up the debris).

We've uncovered a little bit of wild flower meadow, collected loads of apples, planted beautiful donations of a penstemon and salvia, harvested some crops and a few of us even had their first attempt at driving our ride-on mower 'Portia'.

Please pop by for a look and check the blog regularly for the date of our planned Community Fun Event in September.

UPDATE - ACTION DAY - 30 May

A big thank you to everyone who came and helped - the wildflower meadow is now seeded and beginning to germinate - we just need a bit more rain to help the seeds grow.

We now need a few more volunteers who can help out with an hour or so each week - weeding, watering and most importantly cropping the vegetables. Mentoring and training can be provided to anyone who is keen to help but currently not sure what is a vegetable or a weed (a plant in the wrong place!) - just email mitchamorchardteam@gmail.com with your name and we'll get back to you.

5th butterfly species at the orchard today

Today the orchard was visited by the 5th butterfly species to date...a speckled wood, pictured below along with the previous species, respectively: small white, brimstone, common blue and small tortoiseshell.
Maybe when the wild flower meadow, being seeded this Saturday, we will be honoured with the presence of more species!
